Overview
Marrakech doesn't ease you in. The medina hits you with color, noise, mint tea, and motorbikes within the first ten minutes, and it rarely lets up. That intensity is the point — this is a city built for wandering without a map, where riads hide entire gardens behind unmarked doors and the souks reorganize themselves daily by the light.
Getting There
Menara Airport (RAK) sits just 15 minutes from the medina, and most riads arrange airport pickup — worth it on your first night, since the old city's alleys defeat GPS. If you're coming overland from Fes or Casablanca, the train system is comfortable and reliably on time.
Top Experiences
- Watch Jemaa el-Fnaa square transform from daytime orange-juice stalls into a nighttime maze of food stalls and storytellers
- Get intentionally lost in the souks, then navigate out by following the call to prayer toward the Koutoubia minaret
- Spend a slow afternoon in the Jardin Majorelle, Yves Saint Laurent's cobalt-blue garden retreat
- Book a sunrise trip into the Agafay desert, close enough for a half-day escape from the city
Local tip: Agree on a taxi price before you get in — meters are rarely used for tourist routes, and a friendly negotiation is part of the culture, not a scam.
Food to Try
Tagine is the obvious answer, but don't overlook harira soup at a street stall, fresh msemen flatbread for breakfast, and the grilled-meat stands inside Jemaa el-Fnaa after dark, where the smoke and the crowd are half the experience.
Practical Info
- Currency: Moroccan Dirham (MAD) — cash preferred in the medina
- Getting around: Walk the medina; use taxis for anywhere beyond it
- Dress code: Modest clothing is appreciated, especially away from hotel pools
- Bargaining: Expected in the souks — start around a third of the asking price

The Pyramids of Giza are five thousand years old and still somehow larger than expected - Cairo builds an entire city around that fact.

Between the bamboo groves and the machiya-lined lanes, Kyoto rewards slow travel more than any city in Japan.
