Overview

Cairo is one of the world's great megacities, chaotic and dense, wrapped around a river that's supported civilization here for millennia. Most visitors come for the Pyramids of Giza and the treasures of the Egyptian Museum, but the city itself - its markets, mosques, and Nile-side cafes - deserves more than a rushed day trip.

Getting There

Cairo International Airport (CAI) is the main gateway to Egypt, roughly 45 minutes from downtown depending on traffic, which can be significant at almost any hour.

Top Experiences

  • Visit the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx early, ideally at opening, both for lighter crowds and cooler temperatures
  • Explore the Egyptian Museum to see artifacts spanning dynasties
  • Wander Khan el-Khalili bazaar, a market that's operated continuously since the 14th century
  • Take a sunset felucca sailboat ride on the Nile, a genuinely peaceful contrast to the city's pace

Local tip: Hire a licensed guide for the Pyramids - beyond the history, they'll help you navigate persistent vendors and camel-ride offers that can otherwise dominate the visit.

Food to Try

Start with koshari, Egypt's beloved mix of rice, lentils, pasta, and crispy onions, sold everywhere from street carts to sit-down restaurants. Also try ful medames (stewed fava beans) for breakfast and fresh flatbread from a local bakery.

Practical Info

  • Currency: Egyptian Pound (EGP)
  • Getting around: Ride-hailing apps are reliable and help avoid fare negotiation; the metro is fast but crowded
  • Dress: Modest clothing is respectful, especially near mosques
  • Site tickets: Buy Pyramid and museum tickets in advance where possible to skip long queues
