Overview
Seville is Andalusia's capital and, by most accounts, the birthplace of flamenco and tapas culture as we know them. The city runs on a rhythm shaped by its punishing summer heat: long lunches, a genuine afternoon lull, and streets that only really come alive after 9pm. Once you match that pace, Seville is one of the most rewarding cities in Spain.
Getting There
Seville Airport (SVQ) has good connections within Spain and seasonal European routes. High-speed AVE trains connect Seville to Madrid in about 2.5 hours, making it an easy add-on to a wider Spain trip.
Top Experiences
- Tour the Real Alcazar, a still-functioning royal palace with Moorish architecture that predates the Alhambra
- Climb the Giralda tower at the Cathedral for a rooftop view over the old city
- See a flamenco show in the Triana neighborhood, across the river from the tourist center and considered more authentic
- Cross to Plaza de Espana, especially in late afternoon light, when the tile work along the curved facade glows
Local tip: Plan sightseeing for early morning or after 6pm - Seville's summer afternoon heat is genuinely dangerous to underestimate, and most locals are indoors or napping anyway.
Food to Try
Tapas here is a full culture, not a starter course - order a few dishes per person and move between bars rather than sitting at one all night. Look for jamon iberico, salmorejo (a thicker, colder cousin of gazpacho), and fried fish from the Triana market.
Practical Info
- Currency: Euro (EUR)
- Getting around: The old city is compact and walkable; rent a bike for the riverside paths
- Heat: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 40C (104F) - plan accordingly
- Siesta: Many small shops close mid-afternoon; plan errands around it

Iceland's capital is really just base camp — the country's real drama happens an hour outside city limits.

Santorini
The caldera views are non-negotiable, but Santorini's black-sand beaches and dry volcanic wines deserve equal billing.

Lisbon
Lisbon rewards tired legs - the best views, food, and fado all sit at the top of a hill you'll be glad you climbed.
