Overview
Jaipur earned its nickname when the entire old city was painted terracotta pink in 1876 to welcome a royal visit, and the color has been maintained ever since. Rajasthan's capital pairs that photogenic backdrop with genuinely major sights - hilltop forts, a functioning palace complex, and bazaars organized by trade, much as they were centuries ago.
Getting There
Jaipur International Airport (JAI) connects to Delhi in under an hour, making it the natural next stop after the capital on a Golden Triangle route. The train from Delhi is also comfortable and scenic if you have the extra time.
Top Experiences
- Explore Amber Fort, arriving early to walk (not ride) up through the main gate before the heat sets in
- Wander the City Palace complex, still partly home to Jaipur's former royal family
- Photograph Hawa Mahal, the honeycombed Palace of Winds, best seen from the tea shop across the street at sunrise
- Shop the specialty bazaars - Johari Bazaar for jewelry, Bapu Bazaar for textiles - where haggling is expected, not rude
Local tip: Visit Amber Fort in the early morning and Hawa Mahal at sunrise on the same day - both look their best in soft, low light and are far less crowded before 9am.
Food to Try
Rajasthani thalis are the best introduction to the region's food - expect several small dishes including dal baati churma and gatte ki sabzi. Street-side kachori stalls are also worth seeking out for breakfast.
Practical Info
- Currency: Indian Rupee (INR)
- Getting around: Auto-rickshaws and ride-hailing apps both work well; agree on rickshaw fares upfront
- Bargaining: Standard practice in bazaars - start well below the asking price
- Dress: Modest, breathable clothing suits both the climate and local norms
